Tocco – Rome

Wednesday 3rd June 2026

It was a travel day, so we were off early to drive from Tocco to Pescara on the coast where we farewelled Gaill, David, Amber and Anne. They were training south for the next part of their adventure. Lucio drove Geoff and I to Rome through a cracking thunderstorm. The lightning, thunder and rain were quite severe.

An interesting fact about road tolls in Italy and why Queenslanders should not complain how much they pay.  After spending several days in the small village of Tocco and traveling each day to explore the surrounding towns we would pay road tolls each time we ventured out in the district. Usually, 4 to 5 euro and the same to travel back again. On some days there was more than one toll. Today we traveled from the east coast to the west coast and the toll was 20 euro, that’s about $33 Australian dollars for a 2-hour, one-way journey!

We cooled our heels over a lunch whilst waiting for our check-in time. We have a small apartment on the first floor in the Trastevere district. It’s an ancient district with narrow cobblestoned streets, lively piazzas and all next to the Tiber River.

We stopped off in Piazza della Scala for a drink and a bite to eat. After finishing our dinner, we strolled across the piazza and unexpectedly bumped into Nick, Ana Paula and Christine. They also travelled to Rome today from Tocco. We chatted for a short while before returning to our apartment which was only around the corner by 100 metres.
