St Bathans, Central Otago

The focal point in the nearby town of St Bathans is the Vulcan Hotel. Whilst the official population of the town sits at around 10 people the pub hosts many a visitor and locals from around the district. Thirsty Thursday is certainly popular, as we discovered. We can highly recommend the whiskies. The few locals that are in residence are passionate about their place in paradise and work tirelessly to raise funds and restore the few remaining buildings.
I was particularly taken by the Tribute to the local gents who have called the Vulcan their watering hole for many a year “This bar is dedicated to the merry souls of other days who attained contentment long before capacity and no matter what they drank always remained Gentlemen.
The town overlooks the Blue Lake. Previously the site of the local gold mining operations. Today it’s a popular swimming spot, although a little chilly.
