Some Facts of Gold

  • The Catholic Church has used gold to adorn its churches and religious implements for centuries.  It is estimated that the Vatican hold several billion dollars worth of gold.
  • The Golden Buddha in Bangkok is the world’s largest solid gold statue. It was made by Thai Buddhists of the Sukothai Dynasty in 13th or 14th century.
  • The Pharaohs or Kings of Egypt were buried in gold, which they believed was the flesh of the Gods.  The tomb of Tutankhamun was enshrined in three gold coffins, one of which was made of 110 kg of solid gold.
  • The Incas thought gold represented the glory of their Sun God and referred to the precious metal as “Tears of the Sun”.
  • Famous American writer Mark Twain tried gold prospecting in Nevada in 1861, with little success.  He later found work extracting gold from ore unfortunately, he forgot to take off his gold ring and the mercury he was working with caused it to crumble.
  • When the Queen of Sheba came to visit King Solomon, around 960BC, she brought him 3 tonnes of gold as a gift. That’s over $462 million USD at today’s prices.
