Day 3  New Plymouth – Wellington

Our self-contained unit at One Burgess Hill turned out to be just right. It overlooks the Waiwhakaiho River, but we couldn’t see it from our ground floor unit unless we strolled over to the edge about 5 mts away. Their restaurant, Quail’s Nest was open for breakfast. Beautifully set on a hill overlooking the valley and to the east was another hill where our accommodation was located. The entire complex has been well laid out and the gardens are immaculate, but it was time to say goodbye and drive south to Wellington. Due to our relaxed start we found our day was going to be a travel day, so we drove on arriving in Wellington just after mid-afternoon. I had booked the next 3 nights at the Naumi Hotel in Cuba Street.  Certainly, the funky end of town and so was our hotel.  In a previous life it had been the People’s Palace (Salvation Army) and then the Trekkers Hotel (backpackers) and now it is a much sort after for its outlandish furnishings and popular bar and dining facilities. We were on the blue floor with black and white chequered carpet. Our room was decorated in bright orange.  All of the fixtures and fittings are the latest and greatest.  Even the ceiling was wall papered!

We strolled Cuba Street, making our way to the Museum Hotel (my favourite Wellington hotel, but alas no vacancies this time around) for a drink before wandering back to an Italian place in Cuba Street called Ombra.  The food was share plates, with the food arriving at our table in no particular order. All was delicious before finishing off with an affogato.
