Coffee in Italy
Saturday 27th June 2026
Coffee in Italy is more than a just a beverage. it is part of the daily ritual. Ordering “a coffee” (un caffè) gets you a rich, short espresso, typically consumed standing at the bar.
Other coffees available include:-
Caffè Macchiato- Espresso “stained” with a tiny splash of hot milk or foam.
Cappuccino – Equal parts espresso, steamed milk and foam.
Caffè Corretto – Espresso “corrected” with a splash of liquor, such as grappa or sambuca.
Caffè Shakerato – The equivalent of an iced coffee; espresso and sugar shaken with ice until foamy
So when Australians order coffee in Italy (meaning us) we like to sit and enjoy our cuppa under the shade of an umbrella in a piazza watching the world go by. So typically we order an Americano (that’s the name given by the Italians). Which means an espresso served with a jug of hot water (for Geoff) and for me an extra jug filled with hot, frothy milk.
