Alice Springs – Day 2

Thursday 8th May 2025

Today we woke up in the heart of Australia.

Alice Springs train station

After a leisurely breakfast we boarded our respective buses for our afternoon excursion to Simpson’s Gap and Standley Chasm. They are located about 50kms west of Alice Springs in the West MacDonnell Ranges.  The scenery was stunning. The flies were in abundance so our picnic site at Simpson’s Gap involved lots of fly swatting.

After returning to the train, we had time to shower and dress for an evening under the stars. The setting was the historic Telegraph Station. It was a spectacular setting accompanied by delicious food and wine. A live band entertained us throughout the meal but took a pause to allow time for some stargazing led by one of the local guides. The band turned up the volume and switched their playlist to some great dancing tunes. So, we found ourselves spinning around on a red sandy dance floor and ended up being the last ones to catch a ride back to the train. What a fabulous night.
