Conzano Day 1

Saturday 13th June 2026

We are staying in Conzano for one week where we have rented a villa. It is one of the few houses available for rent in this small hilltop village. My father was born here and family research has turned up some interesting facts. My grandparents, Giuseppe Angelino and Carmelina Accatino were also born here. They migrated to Australia in 1913 with their baby son Paulo and my great uncle, Luigi. They all headed to the cane fields of North Queensland. A further two children were born in Australia, my Aunty Julie and a son Emilio (the 1st). Sometime around 1920 they travelled back to Conzano and stayed for a couple of years. During this time tragedy struck and Emilio (aged one) passed away. In 1921 Emilio (my father) was born. It is common practice to name the next born child by the same name, hence the 2nd Emilio. Although everyone who knew my Dad would remember him as Gelly (shortened for Angelino). In 1924 the family returned to Australia eventually buying the sugar cane farm in Aloomba, where my brother David still lives today.

I have published a book on the Angelino/Accatino family and have brought it with me to donate to the Immigration Museum in Conzano.  Conzano has a strong relationship with Australia and in particular Ingham because so many farmers from here migrated to Australia. The main town square (like the others they are never square) is name Piazza Australia. The Immigration Museum has been set up by an Australian couple.

So over the next week we will continue to explore Conzano and the surrounding villages.
