Wednesday 10th December
We woke to a beautiful morning in Doubtless Bay. After a walk along the beach we headed off on a long drive. Our aim was to reach the Coromandel Peninsula by the end of the day. However we did really want to see The Lord of the Forest – a giant Kauri tree in the Waipoua Forest on the west coast. We were certainly not disappointed. What a magnificent tree. We just had to sit and gaze a while at this amazing site. There were quite a few other Kauri trees in the same area. They are truly ancient – this one is called Tane Mahuta and is about 2000 years old. It is about 50 mts in height and has a trunk girth of 14 mts.
