Day 11 – Kings Canyon to Yulara via The Olgas

Monday 17th August

After breakfast we packed up and rode back to Yulara, fueling up at Curtain Springs Roadhouse on petrol and coffee.  We discovered the bird aviaries out the back of the roadhouse as well as the giant cactus.

After riding for just over 3 hours we were back in Yulara by 1pm.  Our room wasn’t ready so we deposited the contents of the paniers with the porters at Sails in the Desert and rode onto the Olgas or Kata Tjuta. We hiked the Valley of the Winds, it’s an easy one hour stroll really, but the views are great.  Riding towards the Olgas is a fantastic experience.  They are far more impressive than the Rock (in my opinion).  Their shape keeps changing with every turn we took. Kata Tjuta consists of 36 domes, the highest rises 546m above the plain which is 198m higher than Ulura.  Kata Tjuta means many heads.

When we returned we took in the sunset on the Rock from near the resort.

We dined at the Desert Sands Hotel in their signature restaurant Arnguli, pronounced Ah-noo-lee, which means bush plum.  Great meal.
