Tocco Day 1
Saturday 30th May 2026
Our first full day in Tocco. After a great meal at a local restaurant last night, it was time to explore the region. First stop was San Vito Chietino to check out the trabocchi. They are fishing platforms erected on stilts along the coastline. Giant nets were located underneath and a sturdy winch could haul up the catch. They were once a common sight on the coast of the Abruzzo region. The origins of this fishing style are a bit vague, however they were considered to be a safer alternative to a fishing boat.

an original trobocco. I think I would rather be in a fishing boat.

Great day for swimming
Being in a fishing village, a seafood lunch was obligatory. I had cod and Geoff has anchovies. After an ice cream we set off to visit a church set up high on the hill above the town.

The Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, dates back to the 12th century

The crypt

The restored artwork in the crypt. Note the narrow opening below the art, this was part of the strategic defense of the abbey during the times of Norman invasion.
