Italian Adventure Day 2

Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore and surrounds.

We spent a large part of our day exploring the Colosseum (see separate post) however we also spent time wandering the streets nearby discovering not one but 2 Angelino restaurants.  Angelino being my family name, I was keen to dine at both. We enjoyed a light lunch at the Angelino ai Fori (near the Roman Forum) and walked a little further and on past Capitoline Hill that evening to find Antica Angelino Trattoria. True to form there was plenty of pasta and red wine and fortunately not so many tourists at this restaurant.

The streets around the Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore provide plenty of people-watching opportunities.

We visited the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, the largest Marian catholic church in Rome. Marian means that it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is simply spectacular. The mosaic floors, the columns, ceilings and walls are all richly decorated. The bell tower is constantly in use ringing out at various times during the day for long periods.
