Model of the Earth showing the Magnetic field

 

This post recognises some great work by the NASA team to allow 3D printing of complex phenomena – the earth!!!

The video explains how the field is created in the small orange circle in the model but it extends about 10 earth radii towards and up to 60 earth radii away from the sun. That is a long way and we get the benefit of a large insulation sheath to keep a lot of solar particles off the planet.

A collaboration of scientists worked together to bring this together. The Aurorasaurus team(yes it will help you understand the auroras), NASA Innovation Lab and Magnetosphere Multiscale Mission (MMS) have done the research and development on the model.

The model I have was printed in Noosa, Australia. Some comments by the 3d printer guru are described below:

This is the “deconstructed” model showing the earth inner and outer core (in orange). Note the difference between “dayside and nightside” magnetosphere. The link contains all of the publicly available 3d print files.
